Let’s talk off-road navigation

If you own an off-road adventure motorcycle, this post is worth a read. It will hopefully give you some clarity and insight around the all too confusing GPS market.

We’ve got one compelling GPS solution for you that is super cost effective, and very easy to use.

Depending on what sort of riding you do, there are various options for GPS navigation. If your motorcycle doesn’t come with a built-in GPS cradle, it’s often confusing trying to work out which GPS is best. Especially if you want something that can be used “off the beaten track” in remote locations that can find even the most obscure tracks – that most other GPS devices won’t recognise.

For example, I used to use the Garmin Montana when riding my WR250R which is an excellent little unit for that bike. It has a touchscreen and is bulletproof. I also use the Garmin Navigator 6 which is built into my R1250. As Garmin dealers we have also tested the Garmin Zumo. All are good quality units, but they have severe limitations which I have found annoying and somewhat dangerous when on the trails. The major issue with Garmin is that you create routes in Garmin Base camp. We found this to be clunky, difficult to learn and glitchy when trying to transfer routes to nav units.

As a travel company specialising in supported off-road adventures, Moto Trekkin has experienced all the headaches you can imagine trying to get GPS files shared with our riders and their various GPS units. That is, until now!

Introducing GAIA GPS Phone App.
We used this remarkable, very powerful little app to pre-route all of our adventure rides. It’s been a pleasure to use, completely accurate, dependable and seamless the entire time. We are now convinced this is all you need for off-road remote navigation and route planning. And the good news is, it’s all on your phone without the need to purchase another expensive GPS device. Oh, and the best part, you don’t ever have to use Garmin Basecamp.
Here are just some of the benefits the GAIA GPS app offers:
  • It’s a free download
  • Brilliant support including videos
  • Works on IOS and Android phones and tablets
  • Super easy to use and learn. Ten mins is all you need.
  • Stable app platform – not glitchy at all
  • Navigate offline (no wifi required)
  • Australia’s best multi-scale topographic mapping
  • Use 40,000 points of interest
  • Save a log of your trip with track recordings, geotagged photos, waypoints and trip notes
  • Backup all your trip data with your free GAIA Cloud account
  • Share routes with riding mates
  • Australia wide accurate mapping
  • Download various detailed map layers with a premium account for New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania (pro version)
  • Plan off-road routes in minutes
  • Search for places towns and cities

This is a serious tool for those who want off-road remote exploring capability.
Quickly create a route from A to B, but It’s important to note that this app won’t navigate you with turn by turn directions. You follow a route line which in my view isn’t a significant limitation.

There is a subscription of $49.95 per year for the premium version, but most adventure riders won’t need the premium version. I don’t mind paying this, as these guys have invested millions in making this tool available. A big thumbs up to the GAIA GPS team from all of us here at Moto Trekkin for your efforts and innovation.

All you need is a powered phone mount and a smart phone with a built-in GPS. We use and sell a variety of Quad Locks including the wireless charging heads. The Quad Lock is high quality and bullet proof. It has never let go on the roughest roads and toughest riding conditions.

After testing so many different GPS units and various apps the GAIA GPS app is our preferred choice for off-road remote adventure riding and trip planning. We use this app to create all of our adventure bike routes Australia Wide which is used by 250 riders at a time. We also use it to create routes in Tasmania, NZ and other places world wide that we conduct our adventure rides.
